Frequently Asked Questions

What can I do to prepare for my session?

Drink plenty of water before your session to avoid dehydration, although be aware that the nearest public toilets are on Shute Lane, next to the fish and chip shop! Please arrive 15 minutes before your session with your swimwear on. We may not be able to extend your visit into the next session if you arrive late.

What do I need to bring with me?

Bring your swimwear and two towels; one for sitting on in the sauna and the other for drying off after getting wet. Drinking water is provided but you may prefer to bring your own water bottle. There are some lockers available but please try not to bring valuables with you. We do not take responsibility for any lost or stolen items.

Should I get cold or hot first?

There’s not right or wrong, it’s down to personal preference. We suggest at least three rounds of each, if possible.

How long should I stay in the sauna and cold dip tank?

We recommend that you stay in the sauna until you feel ‘comfortably uncomfortable’. For some this may be 5 or 10 minutes, for others 15 or 20 minutes. If you feel light headed, dizzy or sick then please leave the sauna immediately to cool down and hydrate. Cooling your body down and resting is important.
We give the same advice regarding the cold dip tank, push yourself out of your comfort zone but don’t set a time target. When you start to feel numb, get out.

How often should I sauna?

There is no such thing as too much sauna, but at least once a week is ideal.

What is sauna hygiene?

Please use the shower before you enter the sauna or dip tank and after the first sweat. It is customary to rinse and wash between each round. Please sit on a towel in the sauna to protect the bench beneath you.

How do I make steam in the sauna?

A bucket of water and ladle is provided so water can be poured on the hot coals to create steam. It is polite to ask permission from fellow sauna users before you pour. Please do not add anything to the water, such as essential oils, without prior permission.

What is a sauna hat?

A banya or sauna hat, worn wet or dry, keeps your head slightly cooler and allows your body to heat more evenly. It also protects your hair from becoming dry and brittle from the heat. Sauna hats are available to use during your session.
